I use pads for rugs to put pieces on that I am sanding and even routing sometimes. I use the type that is a grid of open and closed squares. To keep it from moving when I slide a work piece, I discovered that a short 5/16" hex head bold head in the side track of the SME to hook the material over works fine.

Dik,

Super idea!!! I often use the pads made for routers ( may even be the same one you have) for sanding. Hooking them over a bolt like that is a great idea.
I also recently bought some 1/2" x 1/4" aluminum extrusion to make connectors to use in those slots.
